This painting was commissioned by the manager of the Miramar Hotel which, incidentally, has amazing views from the Needles, in the east, across the whole of Poole Bay to Old Harry Rocks and beyond in the west.
Tolkien the author, who died in 1973, is said to have found respite from his growing fame at the Miramar Hotel, Bournemouth, which he and his wife frequently visited.
